The shaker is the first tool that comes to mind for making a cocktail. There are three main families, which differ in the number of pieces, their capacity and whether or not they have a built-in strainer.
The Boston, the bar shaker
The Boston consists of two tins, or a tin and a glass, that fit together. Its large capacity lets you make several cocktails at once, it opens with a sharp tap and rinses in an instant: it is the bartender’s tool. It takes a little practice to seal and open cleanly, and it is always used with a Hawthorne strainer.
The Cobbler, the all-in-one
The Cobbler has three pieces: a tin, a lid fitted with a strainer and a small cap. No extra accessory needed: you shake, take off the cap and pour. It is the easiest shaker to start with at home.
The Parisian, in between
The Parisian follows the principle of the Boston, two metal pieces, with a more elegant curved body and a very tight seal. It too is used with a strainer.
Which one to choose?
- To start at home: the Cobbler, all-in-one.
- To make several cocktails or work fast: the Boston, with a Hawthorne strainer.
- For a beautiful object on the counter: the Parisian.
Still hesitating? Our cocktail kits bring together a shaker and the accessories that go with it.
