Old Fashioned: the mixing glass recipe

Whiskey, sugar, bitters and an orange twist: the Old Fashioned recipe, stirred in a mixing glass, step by step.

An Old Fashioned in a cut-glass tumbler with an orange twist

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest cocktails: a spirit, a little sugar, a few dashes of bitters and water, brought by the ice. Making it in a mixing glass gives you precise control over dilution.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 10 ml sugar syrup
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • An orange twist
  • Ice cubes, including a large one for serving

Method

  1. Pour the sugar syrup, the bitters and then the whiskey into the mixing glass, measuring with the jigger.
  2. Add ice and stir with the bar spoon for about thirty seconds.
  3. Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass.
  4. Express the orange twist over the glass and drop it into the cocktail.

The bartender’s tip

Taste before straining: if the first sip is too strong, stir a few seconds more. Dilution is part of the recipe.
