Three ingredients in equal parts, very cold ice and an orange twist: the Negroni is one of the easiest cocktails to remember, and one of the most demanding to balance well. It is a stirred cocktail: it is made in a mixing glass, never in a shaker.
Ingredients
- 30 ml gin
- 30 ml Campari
- 30 ml red vermouth
- An orange twist
- Ice cubes, including a large one for serving
Method
- Fill the mixing glass with ice and pour in the three ingredients, measured with the jigger.
- Stir with the bar spoon for about twenty seconds: the mix should be very cold without being too diluted.
- Strain with the Julep strainer into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.
- Express the orange twist over the glass, then drop it into the cocktail.
The bartender’s tip
The bigger the serving ice cube, the more slowly it melts: the Negroni stays balanced to the last sip. A mixing glass with a thick base also keeps the ice cold for longer.
